Vertical City

Vertical City – March – May 2013

Architectural Optics – Denver, Colorado

This optical installation, situated in the historic Carnegie Library on Denver’s Civic Center Plaza, used a view of downtown Denver’s high-rise skyline and busy Colfax Avenue. A live, collage-like composition of the city filled a wall-sized canvas screen, showing both monumental architecture and busy urban space traversed by pedestrians and vehicles in constant motion.

The composition followed the tradition of modernist architectural photography, celebrating the majestic ranks of tall buildings and the busy life of citizens, but Jackson introduced somewhat surreal displacement and reflection to create a more fantastic interpretation. Of course, unlike the classic still photography, the image was monumental in size, colorful, and lively, reflecting the immediate motion and conditions outside, without use of electronics or power.
