Strait
Anamorphic Video Sculpture – 2010-2012
Strait is a moving-image work with two swirling pools appearing simultaneously on the flat table-like surface, running together like mismatched slipping wheels. The viscous images flow around the bases of reflective cylinders, placed at opposite ends of the projection, which seem footed in small stable islands. Viewers, seeing the abstract motion from various angles, eventually locate key viewpoints opposite each cylinder, in which the reflected image of the strange surface resolves itself into a landscape view of river water flowing past a stone (on the one hand) or clouds massing and sweeping over a mountaintop on the other.
